Those selling starters with a shallow back cap are only rated at 2hp, but claim them to be 3hp. The back cap/plate should be approx. 1.25 inches long. The shallow 2hp unit has a cap that is approx. half an inch deep. Please read the complete ad before deciding to buy a starter elsewhere. As you can see in the picture above the knurled bolts that are included are the correct length and style. You will see many starters on the market that have incorrect length bolts. By this we mean that you should have at least 200 thousandths or more of the knurled section showing when dropping the bolt through the alum. mounting pad. This knurled section fills the oversized pilot hole in the block, as the diameter of the knurled part of the bolt is much thicker than the threaded section. Mounting a starter without the proper style and length bolt will cause serious problems for sure. This will cause the bolts to flex, and the starter will shift when cranking. Breaking one or more of the bolts eventually, but well before this happens, the teeth on the starter and flexplate will be damaged to a great extent. We know for a fact that there are some of the 3hp starters on the market with incorrect bolts supplied with them. The problem is not the lack of knurling on the bolt but that the knurling does not protrude past the mounting plate. All GM blocks have this unthreaded portion in the starter mounting holes and is intended for approx. 200 thousanths of the knurled bolt to pilot into. The picture above is exactly what you should see when dropping the bolt through the mounting plate. If you do a search on goggle pertaining to this issue, you will find links to many car forums addressing this issue, and it's importance. When mounting the starter be sure the gear mesh is correct. You don't want the gears to mesh tightly for sure. It may be difficult to see this as the dust cover is usually in the way. The long flat shims will bring the starter away from ring gear if needed. A sign that you may need to use these shims is if the starter has a loud scratchy sound when cranking. This means the starter gear is meshing to tightly. You must remove the starter and install one or two of the long flat shims. This will change the gear mesh. We recommend using both shims on the first try. When you do this you will notice how much quieter the starter sounds. The other shims provided are to used when if your starter gear is sitting to close to the flexplate and possibly touching it when the engine is running. We have tested our sample starter on several engines with normal fitting flexplates and found the starter to have a very decent fitment right out of the box when using a well used flexplate or flywheel. Those using a new plate may want to use the two flat shims upon the first installation. As many of you know we did at one time sell the 3hp starters and stopped for a long time. The reason was a fitment issue. We tried other starters from some of our other suppliers and found them to have simular problems, or the bolts were incorrect. We are very confident that we now have a perfect unit that will give you many years of good service. A note from our company president, Skip White: We have noticed that the ill fitting starters that we returned to our supplier are being offered by other sellers. If you do decide to purchase one of them, be sure that the seller claims them not to have a fitment problem and that the bolt are correct. Our new starter does come with a lifetime warranty. Last year we were the number one seller of the 3hp mini starters, then disaster struck. We discovered a serious fitment issue on our second batch of starters and all had to be returned to the supplier. This was a batch of over 1000 starters. Fortunatly very few went out to customers, and those were recalled when the problem was discovered. We tried starters from other suppliers and found simular problems, and often new problems such as the incorrect bolt style or length mentioned above. Rather than take any chances we waited until our Highline unit became available again with a corrected mounting plate, and we now have it. We offer a lifetime warrenty on these starters, so buy with confidence. My past experience tells me that there are many starters on the market that will not see one or two years of service due to poor design/quality or the above mentioned problems, and many of these starters that don't fit properly or do not have the correct bolts will destroy the flywheel or flexplate eventually. I don't want customers with a failed starter or worse yet a ruined flywheel or flexplate. And you can be sure of one thing many sellers don't really care or realize this.
